For me personally, it's the same reason I disliked AOE III, C&C: generals-RA3, Caesar III, Railroad Tycoon 3. Stronghold 2-3, and Zoo tycoon 2. For those and RCT3 the move from their 2D predecessor to their 3D progeny saw a decline in the quality of gameplay and a focus on the looks of the game, again IMO.Now i love graphics and of all the games mentioned i have played both the older and newer copies. So I guess the only answer I can come up with is perhaps the target audience shifted. I know for me, RCT3 felt more 'cartoony' and less serious ( if thats possible ) than did RCT/2.Overall, your probably right, the differences are minimal but i guess even small changes matter.
I feel like people just don't like to give these games a chance sometimes. Caesar 3 was one of my favourite games growing up, but 4 is better in basically every single way.It maintains everything that made 3 great (mining raw materials, making them in to useful goods, delivering them to houses to upgrade them etc), and eliminating the annoying aspects like having to build in loops all the time to make sure people actually walked around where you wanted them.I honestly don't understand what people don't like about it. This was exactly my thoughts when I got the game. It just didn't quite have the same charm that the first two did.
There's something about the 2D graphics that really worked for RCT and the move to cartoony 3D missed the mark a bit for me.That said, RCT3 has a TON of really cool stuff that has made me come back and revisit the game a few times. Day/Night cycles with lighting, riding your coasters, firework shows, excellent scenery, and a really talented modding and film/coaster/park-making scene around these things. They really push the limits of RCT3 and it really amazes me what they are able to accomplish. Also, wooden roller coasters. I felt (and still feel) that they kinda ruined them in RCT3. They lost some of their appeal for me compared to my love for them in RCT1/2 and this was actually a big deal. I actually really enjoyed RCT3 and thought it better than RCT2.
I don't remember too much about how the interface changed (it's fiddly in RCT3 when looking for research or hiring/training staff but the rest is reasonable) but I thought the new 3D graphics were great - even today they're pretty decent (the scenery and rides at least - just don't look too close at the people)! I still play it from time to time. For anyone interested, has rereleased a fully patched, no-disc-required version. It's $19.99 but it includes both expansion packs and no longer has any DRM.
